PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Rep. David Cook will spend 24 hours in jail after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving.
The Republican from Globe was originally charged with extreme DUI but pleaded guilty Friday to the lesser charge in a deal with prosecutors that avoided a trial.
The Arizona Republic reports Cook faced a 30-day sentence for extreme DUI. He entered his plea in North Mesa Justice Court before Justice of the Peace Cecil Ash, a former Republican legislator.
Cook must complete a drug- and alcohol-treatment program, participate in a Mothers Against Drunk Driving victim-impact panel and avoiding drinking alcohol to excess during a five-year probation period. He also owes more than $1,800 in fines and fees.
Cook apologized following his arrest in December, saying he learned valuable lesson.
