MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation says it received more than 2,700 complaints of alleged environmental harm last year.
WCAX-TV reports the DEC released the findings in its 2018 Enforcement Report, which shows how the state responded to complaints.
The DEC says it assessed nearly $200,000 in penalties for about 50 of the most egregious violations.
The most common violations last year were hazardous material releases involving petroleum or other fuels, unsafe fuel tanks, illegal dumping and releasing pollution into a stream or lake.
The department says citizens reporting alleged violations are a critical source of information, and it takes complaints seriously.
