CORAM, N.Y. (AP) - An intense overnight fire that raged through a Long Island apartment house has claimed a life.

Suffolk County Police Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer says 71-year-old Susan Harelick had managed to get outside the burning building in Coram early Tuesday but then part of an overhang fell on her.

According to Newsday , Beyrer said it wasn’t known whether she died from being hit or from smoke inhalation.

Flames overtook one of the buildings at the Fairfield apartment complex. Several fire departments responded after a security guard called 911 at around 2:40 a.m.

Exterior fire damage also was visible on a neighboring building.
