COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi University for Women is a step closer to demolishing two vacant dormitory buildings.
The College Board on Thursday approved plans for MUW to spend $2.9 million to demolish Taylor and Keirn halls. They are a pair of twin five-story dormitories built in 1958, but which are currently vacant.
The university plans to use money borrowed by the Legislature in previous years to pay for the work. Demolition could start this summer.
MUW says it hopes to build a culinary arts building on the site after demolition is completed. MUW President Nora Miller says the university hopes lawmakers will approve borrowing $6.6 million this year to pay for the first phase of that project.
