Rep. John Delaney of Maryland is vowing to give $2 to charity for every $1 donated to his long-shot presidential campaign — as part of a workaround solution that could improve his chances of qualifying for the Democratic debates.
Mr. Delaney, a multimillionaire who has largely self-funded his bid, launched the “Delaney Debate Challenge” this week.
“It is a really good deal,” Mr. Delaney said in an online video. “You give one [dollar], I give two [dollars] to a charity of your choice or a nonprofit of your choice.”
The Democratic National Committee is requiring that in order for candidates to qualify for their opening debates, they need to have at least 65,000 individual donors to their campaign and to register at at least 1 percent in three recent polls.
Mr. Delaney was the first candidate to enter the 2020 presidential race and apparently is struggling to meet the small dollar threshold.
