MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan is urging the U.S. Senate to enact legislation to curb illegal robocalls.
Donovan is part of a coalition of 54 attorneys general who sent a letter to the U. S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation supporting a proposal to curb illegal robocalls.
The Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence Act would require voice service providers to participate in a call authentication framework to help block unwanted calls and hold telemarketers and robocallers accountable.
Donovan says that more than 48 billion robocalls were made in 2018, making them the number one source of consumer complaints to federal agencies.
In Vermont, the majority of complaints received at the attorney general’s Consumer Assistance Program involved robocalls.
