BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A University at Buffalo advisory council has voted to remove John Kapoor’s name from the pharmacy school building following the drug company founder’s racketeering conviction.
The UB Council passed a naming revocation resolution Monday, calling Kapoor’s actions “wholly contrary” to the university’s values. The State University of New York chancellor and trustees would have to approve the measure.
The 76-year-old former chairman of Insys Therapeutics was convicted last month after being accused of bribing doctors to prescribe a highly addictive fentanyl spray. The case was viewed as part of the government’s effort to go after those it blames for the nation’s opioid crisis.
Kapoor has given about $10.8 million to UB, where he earned a doctorate in 1972. The pharmacy school is named for him and his late wife, Editha.
