Warning: Spoilers for Monday’s “Jeopardy!” episode ahead.
James Holzhauer has set all manner of “Jeopardy!” records during his extended stay on the popular trivia game show. But in Monday’s episode, he was within reach of the granddaddy of them all: Ken Jennings’ all-time winnings record.
Holzhauer needed to earn just $58,485 to break Jennings’ record, and given Holzhauer’s propensity to rack up mega-paydays on the show, it could have happened Monday.
Then came Emma Boettcher.
Boettcher ended Holzhauer’s run at 32 consecutive wins in the episode airing Monday.
The “Final Jeopardy” segment from the episode leaked on social media Sunday night, and multiple outlets confirmed it airs Monday. It has already aired on a station in Montgomery, Alabama, which unusually puts “Jeopardy!” on TV at 9:30 a.m. local time.

Holzhauer correctly guessed the “Final Jeopardy” question but only wagered $1,399 — even though he entered the last round trailing Boettcher by $3,200.
Boettcher also answered the final round correctly — it was Christopher “Kit” Marlowe, in response to a category about Shakespeare. Holzhauer finished with $2,000 for coming in second place and $2,464,216 in total winnings.
After all the drama, Jennings’ record of $2,520,700 over a 74-game winning streak in 2004 remains standing.
