MILWAUKEE (AP) - Mourners are remembering a fallen Milwaukee police officer as a role model to his family and community.

Three days of mourning began Saturday for Officer Kou (koo) Her, in keeping with Hmong tradition.

Her was killed June 18 when his car was struck by a suspected drunken driver who police say sped through a red light. Her was on his way home from his shift at the District 4 police station.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports family and friends, city officials and fellow officers gathered at the Good Hope Center on Saturday to honor Her. The 27-year-old officer was remembered as upbeat and kind, easygoing and quick to laugh.

Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said Her played “a big role in closing that gap” between Hmong community members and officers.
