HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man convicted of setting fire to the home where his family lived after they confronted him about his PCP use has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.
The Hartford Courant reports that 37-year-old Angel Ares destroyed the three-family home in Hartford in February 2018 when he set a mattress on fire on the front porch with four children and eight adults inside.
Everyone got out safely but Ares’ mother suffered smoke inhalation.
Ares’ public defender, Bruce Lorenzen, told Judge James Graham that his client suffered from a gunshot wound several years ago and as a result “he’s got some pretty serious deficits.”
Ares was convicted of first-degree arson among a host of other charges at his trial in March.
