EWING, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says he’s appointing interim University Hospital executive Judith Persichilli to be the state’s next health commissioner.

Murphy, a Democrat, announced Tuesday at an unrelated event his plan to nominate her for the post, which requires Senate confirmation.

Murphy says Persichilli will be the first health commissioner to have started her career as a nurse.

If confirmed, she would succeed Dr. Shereef Elnahal, who is leaving the post to take over as head of Newark’s University Hospital.

Elnahal was named the new president and CEO of the state’s only public hospital last month.
