HELENA, Mont. (AP) - Two conservation groups have filed a lawsuit to block a wildfire mitigation project in Montana’s Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest.

The Independent Record reports Alliance for the Wild Rockies and Native Ecosystems Council filed the lawsuit Wednesday, claiming the U.S. Forest Service erred in its environmental analysis for the Ten Mile-South Helena Project.

The project approved last year calls for thinning, logging and burning on more than 27 square miles (71 square kilometers) over 15 years.

The Forest Service did not respond to the newspaper’s request for comment.

Helena Hunters and Anglers and the Montana Wildlife Federation filed a lawsuit in March seeking to stop the project because of concerns about its effect on big game habitat.
