PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man convicted of pistol-whipping his girlfriend and shooting her five time last year has been sentenced to life in prison.

The North Jersey Record reports that a Superior Court judge called a life term for 41-year-old Michael Mitchell “totally warranted.” The defense had sought a 20-year term.

Jurors in April convicted the Paterson boxer of attempted murder and aggravated assault in the January 2018 shooting in a parked car. Mitchell testified that he left the car before the shooting, which he said someone else committed. He criticized his attorney Friday and accused the court of bias.

Before Mitchell was sentenced, the victim told him “Even when you shot me, I told you I still loved you. Now I get to live my life free of you.”
