HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The police officer and the man he fatally shot in Hartford have been identified.

Connecticut State Police announced Sunday that Hartford Detective Zack Sherry was involved in the Friday night shooting at an Interstate 84 ramp that killed 41-year-old Alphonso Zaporta, of Windsor.

State police say Sherry is a 14-year veteran of the police force. He’s been placed on administrative leave, as is department policy in such shootings.

State police say Sherry and other officers were trying to pull over Zaporta’s vehicle when he drove off.

They say he eventually got out his car and attacked an officer. Police say Sherry shot Zaporta multiple times after it appeared he’d gained control of the other officer’s firearm.

State police say police body camera footage from the incident could be released Monday.
