NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island hospital’s decision to relocate a chapel created in memory of a late doctor has left his family in dismay.
Newport Hospital notified the family of the late Dr. Charles Serbst that his namesake chapel closed on July 22 and will be moved to a smaller room.
Serbst worked as a surgeon at Newport Hospital and was a prisoner of war during World War II.
His family and members of the community raised money to build the chapel in 1971, two years after Serbst’s death.
Serbst’s grandson, Joe Roggero, says the new location of the chapel feels like a closet.
The hospital’s director of facilities says the chapel’s old location will be used for financial counseling services due to “patient needs”.
