PALMER, Pa. (AP) - A judge has ruled that an 80-year-old man charged in the shooting death of his wife in their eastern Pennsylvania home will remain in jail.

The ruling came Friday during an arraignment hearing for Edgar Himel. He’s facing murder and theft charges stemming from the death of 66-year-old Penny VanTassel-Himel.

Authorities have said a July 4 call from her cellphone reported an emergency at the home, but officers didn’t make contact with anyone at the Palmer address. Her body was found three days later, and authorities are investigating whether police responded appropriately to the 911 call.

Himel was arrested in Sterling, Colorado on July 13 and was recently returned to Pennsylvania. He was not represented by an attorney during Friday’s hearing
