COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a South Carolina man believed to have been fatally wounded in a shootout with police was actually killed when he shot himself in the head.
News outlets report the State Law Enforcement Division on Wednesday released a full timeline of events leading to the death of 51-year-old Joseph Hart in February.
Authorities say a neighbor confronted Hart about speeding on a gravel road and Hart pulled a gun, leading the neighbor to call 911.
Hart shot at a responding deputy with a handgun and high-powered rifle. Backup arrived nearly 17 minutes later, and about 60 officers surrounded the scene. A standoff ensued for 90 minutes, involving a SWAT team, armored car and helicopter. Authorities say Hart was on drugs including methamphetamine and ultimately shot himself.
