PONTOTOC, Miss. (AP) - A north Mississippi sheriff says a man has been shot to death in a shootout with law enforcement officers after a traffic chase.

Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards tells The Associated Press that during a traffic stop Monday evening, the driver of a pickup truck took off and deputies chased him.

Edwards says the chase went into Pontotoc County, with officers from the Mississippi Highway Patrol the Union County and Pontotoc County sheriff’s departments involved. Edwards says the Mississippi man got out of the pickup and exchanged gunfire with officers. He says the man died at the scene and no officers were injured.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately released. Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is examining the case, as it does with all shootings involving law enforcement officers.
