COLCHESTER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say the southbound lane of Interstate 89 in Colchester is open again after an overnight truck fire closed the highway for hours.

The fully-loaded 53-foot trailer was completely engulfed in flames when emergency personnel first arrived around 11 p.m. Thursday. The cab had been detached.

The southbound highway between Milton and Colchester was closed for much of the night.

Colchester Fire Chief Sandy Ladd says the trailer was completely loaded with unassembled furniture.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials suspect the truck’s brakes might have caught fire.

The highway reopened around 6 a.m. Friday.
