MADISON, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi family is questioning how an inmate released from a county jail died several days later.

Madison County sheriff’s spokesman Heath Hall told news outlets 51-year-old Larry Thompson was arrested by Canton police Nov. 17 and was taken to the county jail.

Hall says Thompson was released Nov. 28. He died Dec. 1.

Thompson’s family told WJTV-TV he was healthy when he was arrested. The family said witnesses told them jail employees beat Thompson, and then he could not use his legs.

Hall denies that and says Thompson was ill and was being closely monitored by jail staff.

WJTV reported Thompson was admitted to St. Dominic’s Hospital and both legs were amputated before he died.

Family attorney Carlos Moore said the family wants compensation or it will sue.
