BRENT, Ala. (AP) - Meth, marijuana, Xanax pills and more than 50 cell phones have been found in two backpacks near an Alabama prison.

WBRC-TV reported Thursday that the items were found inside backpacks in Brent near the Bibb County Correctional Facility.

Police Chief Terry Nichols says officers were alerted by a private citizen that the items had been found on private property that was about 3/4 of a mile away from the prison. Nichols says a dog had gotten out of a pin, ingested some of the narcotics items and died.

Nichols says the drugs and cell phones were headed inside the prison. The Alabama Department of Corrections said in a statement that they can’t confirm or discount that the items were intended to be smuggled into the prison.
