BOSTON (AP) - The CEO of Boston-based Partners HealthCare says he is stepping down.

Dr. David Torchiana announced Monday night he will retire at the end of April after four years leading the health system.

The 64-year-old says he looks forward to retirement, and he has “full confidence in the future of our organization.”

Partners is the largest health system in Massachusetts, and it is the state’s largest private employer. Under Torchiana’s lead, the system has pursued deals with Rhode Island’s largest health care providers.

Partners board of directors chairman Scott Sperling says Torchiana, who goes by the nickname “Torch,” has been considering retirement for some time.

Sperling says the board will start the process to find his successor in the coming weeks.
