The Washington Nationals hired 88-year-old World Series-winning manager Jack McKeon to be a senior adviser in their front office, The Athletic and ESPN reported.
McKeon was a Major League manager for 16 seasons and led the Florida Marlins to the 2003 World Series title.
His son, Kasey McKeon, is Washington’s director of player procurement.
It will hardly be the elder McKeon’s first front office position, though. He also spent a decade as the San Diego Padres’ general manager, from 1980 to 1990. He took on the dual role of manager and general manager for the final three years of that span.
He was also a special assistant for the Marlins until 2017, when Derek Jeter took a stake in the franchise’s ownership and arranged for McKeon and others to be fired. At the time, McKeon said, “I don’t think I want to retire.”
This way, he doesn’t have to.
