CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A proposed constitutional amendment would create an independent commission to draw boundaries for state elections in New Hampshire.
Current state law leaves redistricting to the state lawmakers. New Hampshire Public Radio reports proposal supporters say that allows for gerrymandering, or the ability of the majority party to draw boundary lines in its favor.
Lawmakers killed several bills in recent years that would have created an independent commission. The current proposal would set up a seven-member panel made up of members of the public and representatives chosen by the Senate president, Speaker of the House, and legislative minority leaders.
A spokesman for Republican Gov. Chris Sununu said in an email that judges have “not hesitated to strike down maps that truly create an uneven playing field,” and that the governor believes the current system works well.
