FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say the passenger in a car that crashed into a Massachusetts apartment building on New Year’s Day, setting off a massive fire, has died.

The Bristol district attorney’s office said Wednesday that 75-year-old Linda Leahey died at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

She was a passenger in a car driven by 72-year-old Judith Mauretti that crashed into the Four Winds Apartments in Fall River on Tuesday, rupturing a gas line. Mauretti died at the scene. Both women were Fall River residents.

Authorities say the fire displaced about 80 residents of the 36-unit building.

The building was demolished Wednesday.

Fall River Fire Chief John Lynch says firefighters will likely remain on the scene for several days.

About 100 firefighters from several communities responded and Lynch says six were taken to the hospital.
