MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland says he is seeking a second term in office.

Strickland told The Commercial Appeal in an interview that he will make his re-election bid official on Tuesday. Strickland won by a large margin over incumbent A C Wharton Jr. and other candidates in 2015.

Strickland said ServiceMaster’s decision to stay in Memphis and move the company headquarters downtown, rebuilding the Memphis Police Department and coming up for a plan to fund universal pre-kindergarten are among his proudest accomplishments.

In December 2017, Memphis sold two public parks to a nonprofit, which then removed statues of three Confederate-era leaders from the parks.

Former mayor Willie Herenton has announced plans to run again this year. Herenton served from 1992 to 2009 and was the city’s first elected black mayor.
