PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s new attorney general is pledging he will advocate for consumers, increase environmental enforcement and improve access to public records in his first term.
Attorney General Peter Neronha made the promises at a breakfast Sunday, a week after his swearing-in ceremony. The Providence Journal reports he says he wishes to move the office quickly in pursuit of reform.
As a former state prosecutor and former U.S. Attorney, Neronha said, he’s seen changes in how prosecutors view drug cases and addiction - and no longer believes that people should be incarcerated for drug possession.
He also says a priority is making sure cases are handled expeditiously and don’t get lost in bureaucracy.
Neronha has said before he plans to pivot the office to better accommodate state public records law.
