RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) - Police in central Wyoming shot and killed a man they say fired on them first.

Riverton Police Chief Eric Murphy says no officers were hurt. Authorities haven’t identified the man killed in the shootout in Riverton on Thursday.

Murphy tells the Riverton Ranger police were working with federal officials on a case involving a convicted felon who illegally possessed firearms and threatened law enforcement.

Murphy says police were with the man when he fired on them. He says officers returned fire. Murphy says the man was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Witnesses say they heard about a dozen shots fired.
