PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The superintendent of Providence Public Schools is resigning at the end of the school year.

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza announced Christopher Maher’s resignation in a brief statement Tuesday.

Maher’s contract runs through the 2020 school year. Elorza’s statement didn’t say why Maher is resigning. Spokeswomen for both Elorza’s office and the school system didn’t immediately respond to a question about it.

Maher said in the statement that the school community welcomed him four years ago when he first came to the city and he thanked them for being incredible partners.

Maher faced a looming budget shortfall. The school district’s budget deficit is expected to swell to $42 million by 2024. He was asked to present a plan to balance the budget.

Elorza thanked Maher for his work and dedication.
