CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s attorney general is announcing the criminal justice legislation he will support during this legislative session.

Democrat Peter Neronha scheduled an event for Monday at his Cranston office.

Neronha says he wants the legislature to pass criminal justice reform legislation that recognizes addiction as a public health crisis, prioritizes treatment over incarceration and eliminates roadblocks to long-term recovery.

He’ll be joined at the event by elected officials, public health and law enforcement officials and members of the treatment and recovery community.

Neronha, a former U.S. attorney, was elected attorney general in November, succeeding the term-limited Democratic incumbent. He took office in January.

He said during the campaign that he’d fight for a criminal justice system that’s smart, not one size fits all, and work to address the opioid crisis.
