Georgia isn’t considered a basketball school. Tom Crean is trying to change that in his first year as the Bulldogs’ coach, but this embarrassment could set them back.
Georgia lost to Mississippi State 68-67 Wednesday when a fan apparently threw a stuffed toy bulldog onto the court in the final second of the game, with Mississippi State already at the free throw line and the game tied at 67.
The referees called a technical foul and gave State’s Quinndary Weatherspoon an extra free throw, to many people’s surprise. He made the game-winning shot with 0.5 seconds on the game clock.
Crean reportedly leaped to the scorer’s table to grab a microphone and plead with his home crowd not to engage in that kind of activity, but it didn’t matter in the end. The coach later said he had “never seen that, not without a warning and certainly without an explanation.”
Georgia dropped to 1-12 in the SEC this year. At least the Bulldogs still have football to look forward.
