KEARNY, N.J. (AP) - The mayor of Kearny, New Jersey says a newly installed air quality meter is being kept busy by a nearby landfill.
Mayor Al Santos contends the 100-acre Keegan Landfill off is the source of stinky fumes that have resulted in more than 200 complaints logged by residents. The Jersey Journal reports Santos says the device installed last week measures how much hydrogen sulfide, a colorless gas that smells of rotten eggs, is in the air.
Santos contends the meter has shown “crazy bad” levels of hydrogen sulfide at several points.
The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which owns the landfill, asserts that the facility isn’t the source of the stench and said Monday the site has been inspected dozens of times since June with no violations.
