CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A businessman has given $5 million to the Medical University of South Carolina to go toward a heart center at a new children’s hospital set to open this fall.

Hospital officials said in honor of Gene Reed Jr.’s gift, they will name the floor with the children’s heart program after him when the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital opens.

Reed says he gave the gift because he thinks it is a once in a lifetime chance to help some of the most vulnerable patients at the children’s hospital.

Hospital CEO Patrick Cawley says the gift is critical to help MUSC continue its heart treatment program founded in the late 1980s.

Reed has already donated more than $250,000 to the hospital over two decades.
