BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The University of Vermont’s only finalist for school president visited the campus this week.

Thursday’s visit was Suresh Garimella’s first chance to publicly meet with staff, faculty and students. WCAX-TV reports the Purdue University scholar says he is still learning about UVM but feels his experience fits the school’s needs.

A UVM spokesperson said while salary is part of the negotiation, Garimella’s salary would likely be in the realm of what the current president makes - around $440,000.

At Purdue, Garimella serves as the Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering. He was appointed by President Donald Trump to serve on the National Science Board, which advises the president and Congress on science policy issues.

Garimella is the only finalist for the position.
