SUNNYVALE, Calif. (AP) - A Silicon Valley police headquarters was evacuated overnight after an officer exposed to what may have been fentanyl had a medical emergency.

Sunnyvale Police Capt. Jim Choi said Thursday that officers on patrol Wednesday booked a suspect carrying a small package. An officer processing the package was exposed to the substance inside the package and immediately went into “respiratory distress.”

Choi said the officer was treated at headquarters and admitted to a hospital for further treatment and observation. He said the officer is in stable condition.

Six other officers were evaluated as a precaution and released from the hospital.

Choi said the suspect told officers the powder was fentanyl, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Headquarters was evacuated and the area decontaminated.

The evacuation was lifted 7 a.m. Thursday.
