SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a 10-year-old boy who was shot in the head while in the back seat of a car traveling on a Southern California highway.

California Highway Patrol Chief Bill Dance said at a press conference Wednesday that Jose Luis Chavez was in custody on a trespassing charge when he was arrested in connection with the shooting. It wasn’t immediately known if the 48-year-old has an attorney.

Dance didn’t say what evidence led to the arrest or what the possible motive was.

The boy was shot Feb. 7 while riding in his aunt’s car. The Riverside Press-Enterprise newspaper reports he was released from a hospital Tuesday and is expected to fully recover.
