PRICE, Utah (AP) - Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot after they said he twice pointed a gun at police in east-central Utah.

The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Dec. 21 shooting that happened in neighboring Emery County.

Authorities identified the man Monday as 40-year-old Mark Stoddard of Huntington, who worked as a sprinkler technician.

An Emery County sheriff’s deputy pulled Stoddard over on suspicion of drunken driving, authorities said. Stoddard then pointed a gun at the deputy and drove off, authorities said.

A state trooper later stopped Stoddard’s vehicle by placing spike strips on the road. Authorities said police were parked behind Stoddard when he got out of the vehicle and again pointed a gun at police.

A state trooper and a sheriff’s deputy fired at Stoddard, killing him.

Stoddard’s mother, Patsy, told the Salt Lake Tribune that her son recently developed an alcohol problem and made a poor choice.
