ATLANTA (AP) - A plan to expand Atlanta’s public train system involves demolishing a popular gay nightclub, which would become Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority station.
The nonprofit Historic Atlanta recently sent a letter to MARTA asking it to consider other locations for the train station, WGCL-TV reports. The Heretic nightclub is important to the history of Atlanta’s LGBTQ community, the group’s secretary, Charlie Paine, said.
“It was one of the earliest lesbian clubs in the city of Atlanta’s history. Now, it serves the gay community as home to the Heretic, for over two decades,” he said.
The proposed Clifton corridor light rail project is currently undergoing an exhaustive environmental review that considers its potential impact on all properties and landmarks, according to a statement by MARTA, which says the organization understands the importance of the club.
MARTA has said it will include the nonprofit in the formal process of identifying historic properties that would be affected by the corridor, according to a Historic Atlanta Facebook post.
