BOSTON (AP) - The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority will install fare gates at its three busiest stations in order to improve fare collections.
The agency ordered the gates to come to North Station, Back Bay and South station in 2020, according to rail operator Keolis Commuter Services.
The gates are being designed in a layout that will manage crowds and may even cut down on crowding in station lobbies by distributing passengers in different directions rather than funneling them toward one place, Keolis spokesman Justin Thompson told The Boston Globe.
“People will have to slightly adjust their behavior,” Thompson said. “It certainly is a change, and we’re confident passengers will adapt. We hear from passengers all the time that fare collection is important to them.”
The objective of the gates is also to boost fare collection at those three hubs where about 90% of all commuter rail trips start or end by making sure that all riders have paid for a ticket prior to boarding.
