MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - The president of West Virginia University announced he’ll be missing the school’s winter graduation ceremony as he recovers from a hip surgery this week.
Dr. E. Gordon Gee will have the hip replacement surgery on Thursday, he said in a university statement on Tuesday. Doctors diagnosed the 75-year-old with a deteriorating hip joint following years of pain in his back, the statement said.
Gee said he hopes to be back soon “better than new,” but the university didn’t provide a timeline for when he may return. He will be missing the school’s commencement ceremony, scheduled for Dec. 21, for the first time in 40 years, he said.
Gee served a stint as president previously from 1980 to 1985 before returning to the role in 2014, The Morgantown News reported.
