NEW CASTLE, Del. (AP) - The director of a Delaware agency that oversees food stamp benefits and determines Medicaid eligibility has been placed on administrative leave with pay, an official says.

Delaware Department of Human Resources spokeswoman Karen Smith confirmed the information about Ray Fitzgerald, director of the Division of Social Services, the News Journal reported Tuesday. Smith did not give a reason for the placement, citing the department’s policy not to discuss personnel matters.

A spokeswoman for the Division of Health and Social Services, which the division falls under, referred comment to the Department of Human Resources.

Fitzgerald has been with the state Department of Health and Social Services since 2006, according to his LinkedIn profile, the News Journal reported. He became director of the social services division in 2015.

The newspaper says Fitzgerald could not be immediately reached for comment about being placed on leave.
