HONOLULU (AP) - A U.S. judge isn’t making any decisions on a former Honolulu prosecutor’s request for a new trial until after she’s sentenced for conspiracy in what’s been described as Hawaii’s biggest corruption case.
Katherine Kealoha filed a motion saying she should get a new trial because her former taxpayer-funded attorney wasn’t effective after a jury found her guilty of conspiracy in a plot to frame her uncle. Kealoha and that lawyer, Cynthia Kagiwada, have parted ways.
Kealoha was convicted along with her husband Louis Kealoha, a former Honolulu police chief. Prosecutors say the couple framed the uncle to keep him from revealing fraud that financed their lavish lifestyle.
U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright on Wednesday said it would be more appropriate to consider the motion after she’s sentenced in October.
