HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man charged in connection with a fatal shooting has accepted a plea deal and will spend time in prison even though he denies guilt.

The Hartford Courant reports that Luis Quinones-Aponte pleaded guilty this week to manslaughter in the death of 39-year-old Eduardo Anes, of Hartford, in February 2018.

Prosecutors say there is a strong inference that the 34-year-old Groton man fired the fatal shots, but no direct evidence. Authorities say Quinones-Aponte suspected Anes of stealing drugs from his girlfriend’s apartment.

Authorities say Quinones-Aponte fled to Puerto Rico after the killing.

Defense attorney Teri Bayer said her client denies guilt but believes the plea deal is in his best interest.

Quinones-Aponte will be sentenced to serve 7 ½ years of a 30-year prison sentence on Oct. 21.
