HOLCOMB, Kan. (AP) - Firefighters are battling a large meat processing plant near Holcomb.
Wichita television station KSNW reports that no injuries have been reported in the fire that began Friday night at Tyson Fresh Meats. Several area fire departments remained on the scene more Saturday morning.
Garden City Fire officials say a plant operations manager called 911 around 8:30 p.m. Friday to report the fire. Officials say the fire is mostly contained to the room where it started, but a roof collapse, the teams are struggling to extinguish the flames.
Garden City Public Information Officer Sergeant Lana Urteaga says the fire started near the slaughter area on the west side of the beef processing plant that employees about 1,200 people. A bus took evacuated workers to a nearby elementary school.
Tyson Foods spokesman Worth Sparkman said in a written statement that the plant will be down indefinitely.
