CLEVELAND, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a Tennessee deputy has shot and killed a man who was wielding a knife.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the man killed in the shooting by a Bradley County sheriff’s deputy was 57-year-old Manuel Charles Carter.

TBI says deputies responded early Saturday to a call of an unwanted armed person at a Cleveland, Tennessee home, which escalated to a stabbing incident while deputies were on the way.

TBI says preliminary information shows deputies tried to use a stun gun to subdue Carter, who was still armed with a knife.

The agency says the stun gun attempt was unsuccessful so a deputy fired at and hit Carter, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

TBI says its investigation is ongoing.
