BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A judge is allowing attorneys for a man accused in a wrong-way crash in Vermont that killed five teenagers to subpoena a state expert who found the man was insane at the time of the crash.
Lawyers for 38-year-old Steven Bourgoin may use the insanity defense. To counter that argument, prosecutors want to be able to call Bourgoin’s ex-girlfriend and mother of his child to counter. The state says she can provide evidence that Bourgoin will use a vehicle as a weapon when he gets angry enough, particularly over custody or financial issues.
Bourgoin has pleaded not guilty to five counts of murder for the 2016 crash in Williston.
Jury selection for his trial is set to begin in late April with the trial scheduled to start in early May.
