ASHBURN — With two picks in the fourth round of the NFL draft, the Redskins selected Stanford running back Bryce Love and Indiana guard Wes Martin.
The Redskins took Love with the 112th overall pick. First-rounders Dwayne Haskins and Montez Sweat announced the selection from the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.
Washington’s’ decision to draft Love is an interesting one, given the strength of their backfield with Derrius Guice, Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson all in the mix. But Love’s talent might have been too much to pass up. The 21-year-old was named 2017 Pac 12 offensive player of the year, rushing for 2,118 yards and 19 touchdowns as a junior.
Love, though, fell in the draft because he tore his ACL in December.
“My goal is to be ready by training camp, mid-training camp, being able to find a way to compete and do my thing,” Love said.
Later on, the Redskins drafted Martin with the No. 131. At Indiana, Martin played in 50 games at left guard. The 6-foot-3, 316-pound guard benched 38 reps of 225 pounds at the scouting combine.
The Redskins desperately needed a guard after they spent 2018 depleted along the offensive line. They also signed former first-rounder Ercek Flowers in the offseason and plan to convert him from tackle to guard.
Martin said he knew he was on the Redskins’ radar, revealing he had a pre-draft visit with the team.
“I’m most known for my brute strength,” Martin said. “I grew up working on a dairy farm. That’s my background. I’m a strong kid. IQ, I guess. I got like a 31 on the Wonderlic, so I’m pretty sharp, I like to think, to be able to ID things and make decisions quickly.
“I think my explosion along with my strength is another big thing. And getting up on the second level, getting on ’backers is something I’ve been doing a long time here back at Indiana.”
