WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - The former fire chief of Delaware’s largest city has been sentenced to a year in prison for stealing money from a group representing black firefighters.

Forty-five-year-old Anthony Goode was also ordered Friday to repay $62,321 restitution.

Goode was indicted in 2017 on charges of racketeering, theft and unlawful use of a credit card. He Goode pleaded guilty in December to the theft and credit card charges.

Prosecutors say Goode, who is black, stole more than $50,000 between 2009 and 2016 while serving as president of the Gallant Blazers. That period covered the time that Goode served as chief of Wilmington’s fire department.

In 2017, city officials agreed to pay $75,000 to settle claims from five white firefighters who said they were victims of race-based discrimination and harassment under Goode.
