WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) - The Maine Law Review is hosting a discussion about access to justice and health care for the state’s many rural residents.
University of Maine School of Law says the law review presented the event, “Ensuring Equal Access to Justice in Maine’s Rural Communities Symposium,” in partnership with Colby College in Waterville. The event began on Friday and ended Saturday.
The school says Maine’s rural communities face a lawyer shortage. The nation averages 40 lawyers per 10,000 residents, but the average in Maine is only 30 per 10,000, and more than half of the state’s lawyers live or practice in southern Maine’s heavily populated Cumberland County.
The law school says attorneys, judges, doctors and legal scholars all participated in the event.
