HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man who was behind the wheel of a stolen SUV when it struck a woman at a bus stop who later died has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.
The Hartford Courant reports that 19-year-old Deykevious Russaw apologized to the victim’s daughter during Wednesday’s sentencing hearing. Russaw was convicted of manslaughter in February in the death of 56-year-old Rosella Shuler in July 2017.
Authorities say Russaw was fleeing the scene of a minor accident in the SUV when he lost control and struck Shuler, throwing her 50 feet and severing one of her legs. She died at the hospital 11 days later. Russaw, who turned 18 the day of the crash, fled on foot.
Russaw awaits trial on a murder charge in an unrelated fatal shooting.
